Photographer Series: Over 40 Psychologist Spotlight

Meet the beautiful and grounded Amalia! Her story is filled with compassion, courage, and so much wisdom—from donating a kidney to working as a trauma psychologist. Amalia, we’re honored to feature you in the 40 Over 40 Project!

A foundation of compassion: What shaped Amalia’s path to psychology

First and foremost, my mother’s unconditional love, support, and kindness laid the foundation for who I am today. Her genuine and thoughtful approach to life inspired my desire to become a psychologist. Later, my ten years serving as a trauma psychologist at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs shaped how I walk through life—with deep humility and gratitude. I will forever hold space in my heart for the men and women I served there. They redefined my understanding of bravery and resilience.

Twenty years ago, I made the decision to donate a kidney to someone I love dearly. That experience forged an unbreakable bond and gave me the gift of witnessing them live a full, vibrant life. It’s been a powerful reminder to refocus on what truly matters. But my most treasured role is being a mother. My two boys give me a profound sense of purpose, connection, and fierce determination to be the best version of myself. I am so proud of the kind, disciplined young men they are becoming—traits that reflect their father, whom I deeply admire.

What women’s portraits can reveal about inner strength and growth

With time, experience, and a fair number of missteps, I’ve learned not to let my emotions overpower my intelligence. I’m a deeply emotional person by nature, but I’ve come to understand the value of the pause—of sitting with a feeling and letting it pass. I've also learned not to say more than necessary in those moments.

Professionally, I’ve discovered that I’m worth the investment. Even when it feels hard or time-consuming, it’s worth it. If you had asked me 30 years ago if I thought I could earn the degree I have today, I would’ve laughed. But learning to delay gratification and choose discipline over instant rewards transformed me into someone I never imagined in adolescence. That journey of self-investment brought growth and strength I never saw coming.

Raising strong sons and embracing confidence after 40

I’m most proud of my sons. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel overwhelming pride in being their mom. Watching them grow into respectful, loving, and driven young men has been one of life’s greatest gifts. They, along with their father, are the heart of everything I do.

To me, confidence means accepting every part of yourself—your strengths, your flaws, your fears, and your ambitions. It’s understanding that life won’t always go as planned, that you’ll make mistakes and have regrets, but at your core, you’ll be okay. You’ll rise again.

I nurture myself by learning to calm my own internal storms. I used to think venting was therapeutic, but over time I’ve realized it often amplifies negative thoughts. So now, I reflect, release, and do my best to move forward—even when I fall short.

In my free time, I find peace in running, gardening, reading, and planning special moments for my family. I also love just hanging out with my two little best friends, my pugs, Frances and Mabel.

Why life after 40 is the perfect time to invest in yourself

To every woman over 40: these can truly be the best years yet. Lean into who you are, exactly as you are. Acceptance has a beautiful way of inspiring growth.

Finding the right Kansas City photographer for an empowering experience

Being in front of the camera was a big step outside of my comfort zone—but it turned out to be incredibly empowering. Like many women, I’ve spent years focusing on the parts of myself I wished were different instead of celebrating my strengths. This experience shifted that perspective. It reminded me how important it is to invest in yourself—and how freeing it can be to truly see yourself.
